would an all steel garbage dumpster...

make a good faraday cage? if so, alot of electronic gear could be safely stored in one.

even a pocket motorcycle or small 4 wheeler, for that matter, how about those 40 foot all metal shipping containers, put cars or tractors inside it.

It depends, you have to be sure to insulate the inside of the dumpster first off. Also make sure theres no holes, and you'd have to take the plastic lids off and replace them with steel ones. Closing/sealing is a whole other issue as well that would need to be addressed properly. The metal used in dumpsters is probably overkill, you can use sheet metal and get the same effect if I'm not mistaken...

You might just be better off taking the computer out of the motorcycle/ATV/whatever, and putting that into a small faraday cage. I'm not into cars, so maybe theres too much work involved with that, but it might save you some money. Also, you need to make sure you have a tight seal, so I don't know how well a cargo container will work, depends on the shape the container is in, and you have to insulate the inside. Rubber paint maybe?

I have been thinking of using old dumpsters as a basis for a small buried shelter.

Best thing for a Faraday cage is to ground it, and have NO spaces to allow electromagnetic energy in or out.

I thought that a cage could be made from fine wire mesh as long as it was on all 4 sides and grounded. Isn't the steel mesh on the front of a microwave oven doing the samething? The hole size depends on the wave-length of the source. Am I wrong here? :smokin:

Correctomundo, thats why sheet metal will work just as good, and its probably cheaper and easier to get.

Given the choice I'd rather live in a new dumpster, or a good sized length of large diameter culvert pipe.

The amount of time, energy, and money it would take to deodorize and sanitize an old dumpster is much better spent elsewhere.
